Description
Since its establishment in 1965, CLA has provided networking and educational opportunities for those involved in legal and business sectors. At CLA we aim to encourage knowledge and understanding of commercial law and practices in both Australia and overseas. CLA seeks to play an important role in disseminating information and encouraging debate on important issues affecting commercial lawyers.
This role would suit someone who is seeking a part-time role, works at multiple other associations or is looking to scale back as this role typically operates 2-3 days a week. Role Description:
1. Implement the CLA’s strategic and marketing plans with particular emphasis on membership and revenue.
2. Support and represent the organisation at seminars and other functions — as well as undertaking all marketing, arrangements required for these events, liaising with speakers, interacting with judges, court staff, lawyers and other professionals, and roll-out of promotional campaigns.
3. Oversee and attend to Membership records, subscription renewals, and applications for memberships via the CLA’s CRM, Customer Records Management system
4. Undertake the role of Public Officer and Company Secretary on behalf of the CLA and oversee the lodging of any returns to the Australian Tax Office and Australian Securities and Investments Commission, ACNC Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission as required by law, and prepare the notices of meeting and the Annual General Meeting
5. Develop broad public relations strategies aimed at highlighting the CLA’s profile within law, commerce, government, and the general community.
6. Oversee the publication of the CLA’s academic journal, the Commercial Law Quarterly.
7. Oversee and attend to the corporate and financial management of the CLA, including:
- Prepare board papers, including reports on current projects
- Draft and distribute minutes of board meetings
- And, attend to action items arising from meetings.
8. Financial management including, the drafting of yearly business plans and operating budgets
9. Oversee financial matters such as:
- Preparation of monthly and annual financial reports through the accounting package.
- Prepare accounts for audit at the end of the financial year.
- Arrange payment of accounts in conjunction with the Treasurer.
- Liaise with the CLA’s auditors as and when required.
- Supervise the work of any staff or consultants.
- Attend to any other areas as directed by the President.
Requirements
The CEO/Association Manager will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the association, promoting its activities, and supporting the President and Board of Directors. This role is ideal for individuals with an interest in the legal profession, strong organisational skills, and a passion for community engagement.
Who are we seeking?
To excel in this role, you will have:
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Experience in event planning, administration, or marketing.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with a team.
- Familiarity with the legal profession or interest in the law (preferred but not required).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital tools for marketing and communications, use of Xero financial software.
- CRM experience is a bonus
