About the role
We are currently seeking a full-time Media and Communications Officer to join the AVA team at our National Office in St Leonards, Sydney, on a 12 month maternity leave cover contract.
This role plays a crucial part in shaping and enhancing the AVA’s public image, ensuring effective communication with members and stakeholders, championing AVA initiatives, and maintaining our core values.
The primary responsibilities of this position include developing targeted communications, implementing external communications and media strategies, supporting media activities such as enquiry management and monitoring programs and coverage. Additionally, the role involves identifying trends to increase the AVA’s visibility and awareness of challenges within the veterinary sector.
The successful candidate will possess a strong interest in strategic communication and a commitment to making a substantive impact in the veterinary community.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and deliver communications, media, and marketing campaigns.
- Create engaging content across digital, social media, email, and traditional channels.
- Manage AVA's social media presence, including content planning, publishing, and community engagement.
- Prepare and distribute email communications (EDMs) and website content.
- Respond to media enquiries and support media relations activities.
- Draft media releases, briefing materials, and other communications collateral.
- Monitor and report on media coverage, campaign performance, and audience engagement.
- Maintain communication and media databases and reporting tools.
- Collaborate with internal teams and stakeholders to deliver effective communication outcomes.

Requirements
About You
You will bring:
Essential
- Tertiary qualifications in media, marketing or communications
- At least 3-5 years of experience in a similar role
- Demonstrated ability to design effective media, communications and marketing campaigns
- Experience with digital and traditional media campaign development and execution
- Ability to create quality video, audio, and digital content
- Research, testing, and marketing analytic skills
- Knowledge of content management systems
- Ability to use web, email, and digital channels, including social media
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to meet deadlines without compromise on accuracy or detail
Desirable
- Previous experience with some or all of the following programs: Optimizely, Click Dimensions, Dynamics 365, Canva
- Previous experience in the veterinary industry
- Understanding of membership organisations and/or associations
